Exchange ActiveSync on your G1!

Exchange ActiveSync for your G1!

If you're like me then you've been waiting for a solid option for accessing your Microsoft Exchange based email for quite some time. Not opening OWA in your browser or dealing with apps that you pay 20$ for only to watch crash every other time they are opened.

It was announced that the HTC Magic would come with a "Work Email" app from HTC that was not to be released for other phones or to the Android market, but that doesn't mean it wasn't going to make it's way to the web eventually. This time the app made it to the web before the phone it was supposed to be released on was even launched!

Now everyone with a G1 (or any android phone) can enjoy the "Work Email" Exchange ActiveSync app included on the HTC Magic (myTouch3G)!

You can install the app by simply clicking on the following link from your Android browser:
Download Work Email for Android.

I've also taken the liberty of posting the T-Mobile Sherpa app for users to download from their Android browser:
Download Sherpa for Android.

Or scan one of the QR codes below to download:

You can thank the fellas at xda-developers for this one, if you have any trouble downloading please leave a comment.

  1. Does anyone else get a “parse” error when they try to install this?

  2. The parsing error means the file doesn’t match the embedded checksum. Translation: it got corrupted during the download (this can easily happen on 3G wireless). I solved it by downloading Mail.apk to my PC, then copying to the SD card over USB, and installing from there.

  3. The other fix to this, is just connect via WiFi and download and install the app. Worked just fine on mine.

  4. Love the app, thanks! I love the ability to file email into my outlook folders.
One question: is it possible to make the folder list appear alphabetically?

  5. I only get a error message thats says”Application not installed”
HTC mail could not be installed on this phone

My phone is a HTC Magic

Any idea why i get this error??

  6. If this is work mail why can’t you attach doc and pdf files to email ???

  7. is it possible to attach files other than multimedia — can’t attach DOC and PDF files ???

  8. thank you so much! I love my droid, and was hoping I wouldn’t have to go back to bb. Thanks to you, I don’t have to! Signature with outgoing messages, and the fact that it’s not a combined with my personal email is huge!! THANK YOU!!!

  9. Thnak you for a great app. Love the fact that it’s free. Is there any chance you can also get the Work Calendar to sync up. Might need a separate app or additional functionality.
    Love your work!

  10. I just keeping getting “Failed to create the account. Please try again later.’

I’m getting this from the manual setup screen, after I’ve entered all of the connection & auth information.

    Thoughts?

  11. not working :(

  12. @joshuamc

Try to leave the “domain” or “domain name” entry blank, even if you have a hosted Exchange account somewhere.

At the server field, enter the hostname or IP address of the Exchange server without any https:// or anything before it. Also, don’t append any /exchange, /owa or /Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync or anything.

Try your entire email address as your user name (not just the part before the @), and also make sure SSL is checked (you’d be a fool to have it off, even if the server would not require it).

The above worked for me, although I did have to tinker with it for a while before I figured it out. I think it was the combination of having to enter a bare hostname without anything else, AS WELL AS leaving the domain field blank.

    Good luck! :)

  13. Works beautifully! My company just migrated to microsoftonline.com email, which at first looks like one needs Windows Mobile on your PDA to be able to sync (shame on Microsoft for being SO proprietary), however this Work Email application really solves the problem!

  14. Does this have the ability to send group emails? So far I can’t find it. Otherwise the program is running good.

  15. I’m getting the “Failed to create the account. Please try again later.” also and I tried all of vb’s suggestions. It is logging in successfully because I get a login failure if I change my userid or password. Any other tips?

  16. Thank you so much! Is there a way to get my calendar synced too??

  17. AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME!

  18. wont work on my phone. I have a droid eris and when i try to install it it says “IMAP server could not be installed on this phone” Plz help!

  19. Your droid eris should already have exchange support, just go to mail, new account and choose Exchange server.

  20. I downloaded this app… it’s great. I have 1 question though. Is there any way now or possibly the near future to actually sort the “Folders” alphabetically. I have around 40 subfolders in my exchange email… when I go to the folders option in the app they are in a completely random order.

  21. Your mail server admin may need to activate Active Sync for your account

  22. If you get the “cannot install” message, you need to uninstall an existing version. I had the same problem. I was able to install after I uninstall an existing “Work Email” from the phone.

  23. How do you get the contacts the calendar to work with this? I downloaded it and it works great for email but it doesn’t have my calendar or contacts.

  24. I have an HTC Hero and I have to delete my existing mail app before I can install this one. I am using Touchdown currently in demo mode and it works great but I am not connecting through an active sync server as my company doesn’t use that. The platform that touchdown is connecting to is exchange 2003 (my company doesn’t give me direct access to exchange server say on a blackberry). Touchdown is able to show me my inbox nonetheless and I can send, receive, use contacts, calendar, just as I can with OWA. Will this program work if I am not using an Active Sync Server?

  25. I’m loving this app but do have a question.
All of my folders aren’t coming across, is there a max number of folders it will sync?

    Thanks

  26. Software is excellent, however I need to access my contacts to be able to make and receive phone calls like on my other HTC windows mobile phone

  27. Does anyone have an application that allows me to access my Exchange mail server? This product doesn’t work at all – will not connect or verify. We have tried it on 4 phones with 3 different Exchange servers. Total bust.

So I was wondering if there is anything out there that is known to work?

    Thanks

  28. With the “work email” app, I can’t display html. The option for this is ghosted out and will not let me toggle from text to html. Thoughts?

  29. AWESOME! was dissapointed when Droid didnt allow outlook email signatures out of the box. Tried K9 mail, NO LUCK. this works like a charm for my Motorola Droid……. Thanks youre a lifesave!!!

  30. I am on a non-rooted motor Droid. The work email apparently is great. It syncs with exchange and I get all my email. Perfect, almost. I know the app is supposed to allow html but the choice to change from plain text is ghosted out and won’t let me toggle between the two. What am I missing?

  31. Okay, this is my crazy issue. I have installed it, it is finding the server…but I get the error “Authentication Failed. Please verify username and/or password.” I think I know why. I know my password and I have logged into it on our local site with my password. My issue is that my Username has a space in it. (First Last) When I enter my name into it the way it is in my Microsoft Outlook with that space, the app automatically erases it. I tried a period, an under-dash and just typing in my email addy and that same error pops up. Is there anything I can do? Or do I need to contact support and have someone change my UserName?

    Thanks!

  32. This app is very buggy, is there another version out that is newer than this one.

Bugs that I found, that are causing most of others headaches.
Doesn’t support WBXML Email tag of InternetCPID.

What I found above is from many hours working with my own ActiveSync server and turning tags off and on untill the app synced correctly. I just view the Droids logs to find the errors it spit out each time, using the sdk and the adb logcat command.

The InternetCPID tag was added somewhere in-between Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2007 SP2. So if you are syncing it is most likely because your exchange server is an older release, like 2003 or 2007 w/no sp. The specs do say the InternetCPID is a required field from 2007 on, so it is an issue with the “Work Email” app.

That is what I found so far…

  33. This is fantastic. Thank you so much for thinking of us G1 users — and saving us from being gouged $30 by Touchdown.

  34. after playing around with the entries i finally got the email to work….except it doesn’t show my contacts when i compose an email. anyone know how to get it to show my contacts???

  35. After scanning the left bar code on my new Hero: I received a pop up “For security, your phone is set to block installation of applications not sourced in Android Market”

  36. This application is very good! However at one point it stopped working on my G1. After trying different combinations I came here and thanks to VB’s recommendations I managed to solve the problem by leaving the domain field empty. Thanks mate!

  37. For those having a poblem installing the work email. You will need to download the Delete Apps Dev app from the market. After that the file that want to delete is the “com.htc.android.com”. hope this helps because is worked for me

  38. Does this work with Trust Digital? It will sync correctly but it will not force a pin. Can it be made to accept command from trust digital?
    Thank you

  39. Thank you very much for this good app ~!
    and I have a questioin ~
    I can,t view or download attatched file (doc,txt ..etc)\
    Is there any problem ?

  40. How can I reduce the disk space usage for data on my G1? Is there an option for compacting or getting rid of old messages in the G1 data store? I’m currently at 2.3Mb of data.

  41. I downloaded the app, and it connects to our Exchange server, and dowloaded my mail just fine. The problem is, I cannot find any icon in my apps list for it to start it up!. Right now I am long pressing my home button to get back to it. In the tasker, you do see the Grey Mail Box titled “Work Email”, but in the programs panel, it’s not there. I’m on a motodriod. It is called something other than Work Email?.

  42. app looks fun, will check it out!

  43. Who do I contact for assistance in setting up the Exchange ActiveSync app? It’s not setting up…keep getting error messages

  44. Shawn, since it’s an HTC application it’s not going to be supported on any other devices. Your best bet is to check out a website like androidforums.com and see if anyone can assist you with the problems you’re encountering.

  45. Does not work with Froyo 2.2 on droid

  46. Any chance Work Email will be updated to work with Froyo? I upgraded my Droid to a Froyo custom ROM recently and Work Email doesn’t work =(

  47. Hi. This looks as something I could use. I have an HTC Desire (brilliant!) which comes with Exchange email capabilities, but only for ONE Exchange account. I have need for TWO Exchange accounts on my Desire. Can I load this app safely for my second account without messing up my first?

    Thanks, Ken

  48. loved this option on my Nexus One on 2.1…unfortunately does not work now with my update to 2.2 froyo…any chance this is going to be updated?

  49. need Froyo support bad!

  50. Hey, I have HTC Tatoo. When I try installing using HTC sync by connecting to PC, it throws a message – ” ”Application not installed. HTC mail could not be installed on this phone

Pointers to resolve this issue is highly appreciated. Thanks
